What is Defensive Pistol Shooting?
Defensive pistol shooting as a sport is quite simply the use of practical equipment including full charge service ammunition to solve simulated "real world" self-defense scenarios. Shooters competing in Defensive Pistol events are required to use practical handguns and holsters that are truly suitable for self-defense use. No "competition only" equipment is permitted in Defensive Pistol matches since the main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual, not his or her equipment or gamesmanship. Defensive Pistol MatchesISI Shootists hosts I.D.P.A. matches generally on the fourth Saturday of every month at the I.S.I. ranges in Piru, California. (see I.S.I. map) Match fees are $20.00 and awards are presented in each class. For further information on the I.D.P.A. in general, see www.idpa.com. An excellent overview of IDPA along with some original articles are available at sportshooter.com's IDPA page. If once each month isn't enough, matches are available in Victorville. In addition to IDPA competition, ISI hosts compact gun matches that are perfect for testing your skills with your small carry or backup gun. There are run on the same stages used for the IDPA matches but with rules modified to suit the smaller firearm. Recent ISI match results courtesy of Kent Fletchter.
